20 Elephant and Castle, London, SE1

Draper House was the tallest residential tower in London when it was originally completed in 1965. Draper House is unusual in a number of ways with its Brutalist architecture displaying early signs of Structural Expressionism thanks to the exposed grid-frame and vertical structural steel running up the north and south sides. Also breaking the Brutalist mould is the stone panelling which is Sicilian marble, a particularly extravagant touch for a council block. As with other Brutalist residential high-rises of the age such as Trellick Tower, the apartments within are arranged as maisonettes lined up on opposing sides of a central corridor with the lower level of each maisonette having its own balcony.
